Learn what strength is and how to build it through Pilates!
What is strength & strength training? Strength is the Ability/ capability for the body to overcome a large force or an opposing forces. Strength training (also known as resistance exercise) increases muscle strength by making muscles work against a weight or force. Resistance exercise is considered a form of anaerobic exercise.
Benefits of strength training include:
- Improved flexibility, mobility, and balance — supporting independence as we age.
- Weight management and an improved muscle-to-fat ratio, which can be even more effective for fat loss than aerobic exercise.
- Reduced risk of cognitive decline in older adults.
- Greater stamina — stronger muscles help you move more efficiently and feel less fatigued.
- Increased bone density and strength, lowering the risk of osteoporosis.
What to expect in this workshop
In this 3 hour hands-on workshop, we will explore how to build strength using the Pilates Reformer and a variety of props. Together, we will cover:
- What "strength" means for different individuals and bodies.
- Key muscle groups to focus on for general strength development.
- The different muscle fiber types, and how to train those that contribute most to strength.
- Effective methods and techniques for strength training.
- Principles of strength training programming.
- Practical application using the Reformer and studio equipment.
- A 60-minute strength-focused Pilates class to experience these concepts firsthand.
- How to design and teach strength-based programs within a Pilates context.

Prerequisite:
A Pilates background is recommended.
NOTE:
- The course will only proceed if a minimum number of students sign up. The class may be cancelled or rescheduled if this number is not reached.
- Students will be notified about 1 - 2 weeks in advance if the class is cancelled due to insufficient enrollment.
